Melrose Residential, home

Mission and values

Our Mission and Values

Melrose Residential runs on five standards we call CARES. They guide how our staff work, how we make decisions, and how we treat the people who live here.

Our mission

Melrose Residential serves a purpose to provide a stable, respectful home for adults living with serious mental illness, supported by a team that is accountable to the people we serve.

We are a community, and we believe a good home is built on open communication, mutual respect, and people who know one another. With five residents, our staff learn each person's routines and preferences, and residents get to know each other and the team.

How we work

The CARES  Standard

CARES guides our staff in everything they do. Every member of our team follows it, including our care staff, Administrator, and owner.

  1. Compassion

We meet every person with patience and kindness, every shift.

    In practice

Staff take time to learn each resident's routines, preferences, and personalities, and sit down to talk when someone needs it.

  2. Accountability

We take responsibility for our work. Residents and families can voice concerns at any time, and we listen, respond, and correct mistakes.

    In practice

When a resident files a grievance, the Administrator meets with them within five calendar days and gives a written decision. If a matter can’t wait, residents can request an expedited review and get a written response within 48 hours.

  3. Respect

We honor each resident's rights, privacy, and dignity.

    In practice

Each resident has a private bedroom with a lockable door, and each person has a say in how they spend their time.

  4. Empowerment

We involve each person in decisions about their own care and daily life.

    In practice

Each resident's service plan is written with them, and families are kept informed when the resident agrees.

  5. Safety

We work every day to keep the home safe and calm for residents and staff.

    In practice

Staff are on site around the clock. Every team member completes required training and an approved background check before working alone with residents, and direct care staff keep current CPR and First Aid certification.

Our community

Community and communication

A home works best when people talk to each other. Our staff take the time to listen, and we talk things through when a problem comes up. House meetings give residents a say in meals, activities, and daily life at home. Residents and families can raise a concern at any time, and residents can always file a formal grievance.

What we ask

Living together

A home is shared, and we ask everyone who lives here to help it feel welcoming. Our Social Covenants, which are reviewed with each resident at move in, are shared agreements for living together:

  • Speak with respect and kindness, even when we disagree.
  • Welcome people of every background, culture, identity, and belief.
  • Respect each other's privacy and belongings, and knock before entering someone's room.
  • Be considerate in shared spaces, and keep noise low during quiet hours.
  • Keep other people’s personal information private.

These agreements never take away anyone's rights. If one ever gets in the way of your rights, you can tell any staff member, bring it to a house meeting, or file a grievance.

Residents' rights

Your rights at Melrose

Residents' rights are reviewed with each person at move in, and the full list is posted in the home.

  • A private bedroom with a lockable door.
  • Access to food and snacks at any time.
  • The right to raise a concern, or to file a grievance, receive a written decision, and appeal.
  • The freedom to speak up, with your home and services protected.

We will take it together on opening day, Summer of 2027, and share it here.

The people

Our team

The people who work at Melrose are the ones residents see every day, so we choose them carefully and train them well. In a home of five, staff have time to learn each person's routines and preferences, and that shapes how we hire and how we work:

  • Every staff member completes orientation and required training before they start, including CPR and First Aid.
  • Every staff member passes an approved criminal background check before starting.
  • A shift lead guides each day and second shift, and a staff member is on site all night.
  • Our Facility Administrator oversees the home and meets with residents about their concerns.
  • We arrange for outside providers to visit each week for residents who want that support, and residents keep their own providers.

Every member of our team follows the CARES standards, including our care staff, Administrator, and owner. We are building our care team now, and we welcome people who want steady, respectful work in a small home.
